Civil Unrest Alert-Turkey


The Situation:

On 1 September 2022, several groups are planning to stage anti-war rallies and similar events in various cities across Turkey to mark International Peace Day.


Organizers have announced the times and locations of several such events. Related, unannounced demonstrations, however, will likely take place in locations not listed below. Most demonstrations are expected to remain peaceful, but isolated clashes remain possible.


Organizers have announced the following events:

  • Istanbul: Likely the largest of the gatherings; rally at Kadikoy Ferry Wharf Square starting at 19:30.

  • Adana: Rally at Ataturk Park In Seyhan district starting at 17:00.

  • Ankara: Various events in Anitpark in Cankaya district.

  • Batman: Rally at Ataturk Park at 17:00.

  • Bursa: Gathering at Fomara Square at 19:00.

  • Diyarbakir: Rally at Dagkapi Square.

  • Eskisehir: March from the Edi-Koop market to the National Monument (Ulus Aniti) starting at 18:30.

  • Izmir: Gathering at Republic Square in the Konak neighborhood starting at 19:00.


Possible Effects:

  • Demonstrations, which may grow in size and volatility

  • Blocked roads

  • Increased law enforcement presence and possible clashes with demonstrators

  • Localized transportation and business disruptions

  • Presence of counter-protesters and increased tensions


Mitigating Measures to Apply:

  • Prepare for disruptions caused by protests, such as increased traffic and security, blocked roads, and potential travel into demonstration sites.

  • Check the local situation (local and social media, embassy, POC at the destination, etc.) prior to travel.

  • Avoid all protests and demonstrations, which have the possibility of turning violent and may serve as a catalyst of COVID-19 spread.

  • Confirm transportation arrangements before arrival/departure.

  • Allow extra time to travel to/from the destination, airport, and accommodations.

  • Avoid travel near government buildings and central squares, instead utilizing bypasses whenever possible

  • Enroll in a Safe Traveler program to receive warnings from your preferred embassy.
