Holiday Travel Alert-Malaysia

The Situation:

A travel surge is expected across Malaysia before, during, and after Deepavali/Diwali on 24 October. The PLUS Expressway is expected to have as many as 1.9 million vehicles traveling daily during this holiday period. An advisory from PLUS expressway suggested beginning highway journeys north before 10am and highway journeys south before 9:00am. Public transportation, shopping areas, and public areas are likely to be over-crowded.

Possible Effects:

● Large gatherings, which may grow in size and volatility

● Increased law enforcement presence and possible clashes with civilians

● Localized transportation and business disruptions

● Blocked roadways and traffic congestion, causing localized transportation disruptions and delays.

Mitigating Measures to Apply:

● Prepare for disruptions, such as increased traffic and security, blocked roads, and potential travel into gathering sites.

● Check the local situation (local and social media, embassy, POC at the destination, etc.) prior to travel.

● Avoid all gatherings, protests, and demonstrations, which have the possibility of turning violent and may serve as a catalyst of COVID-19 spread.

● Confirm transportation arrangements before arrival/departure.

● Allow extra time to travel to/from the destination, airport, and accommodations.

● Avoid travel near central squares, instead utilizing bypasses whenever possible

● Enroll in a Safe Traveler program to receive warnings from your preferred embassy.
