Japan and South Korea weather alert

The Situation:

Tropical Storm Tapah became a tropical storm on Thursday and the slow-moving storm

will continue to stay well east of Taiwan as it begins to track north towards western Japan

and southern and eastern South Korea. The greatest risks coming from flooding

downpours. Tapah is expected to strengthen over the weekend and damaging winds will

become more of a threat.


Possible Effects:

  • Heavy rainfall could lead to landslides and flooding in already saturated areas

  • Downed trees, hindering rescue/recovery efforts

  • Traffic delays

  • Cancelled, delayed or rerouted flights

  • Power outages in homes and places of work


Mitigating Factors to Apply:

  • Monitor local news and weather media for updates

  • Allow extra time for travel

  • Avoid traveling through flooded areas

  • Keep extra bottled water in lodging

  • Keep electronics charged

  • Check with airline for possible flight delays or cancellations

  • Enroll in the Safe Traveler program (STEP) to receive warnings from the U.S. Embassy or enroll in your preferred embassy alert system.
