Japan weather alert UPDATE

The Situation:

Last week saw record-breaking heavy rains, some of which caused deadly mudslides in southern parts of Kyushu Island. More heavy rains expected over the last half of this week – particularly Wednesday through Thursday – across Shikoku, Kyushu and southern Honshu. Nagasaki, Kochi and Osaka may see travel disruptions and flooding.



Possible Effects:

  • Heavy rainfall could lead to landslides and flooding in already saturated areas

  • Downed trees, hindering rescue/recovery efforts

  • Traffic delays

  • Cancelled flights

  • Power outages in homes and places of work


Mitigating Factors to Apply:

  • Monitor local news and weather media for updates

  • Allow extra time for travel

  • Avoid traveling through flooded areas

  • Keep extra bottled water in lodging

  • Keep electronics charged

  • Check with airline for possible flight delays or cancellations

  • Enroll in the Safe Traveler program (STEP) to receive warnings from the U.S. Embassy, or sign up for your country’s embassy alert system to receive warnings
