Situation:
Cartel gunmen in Sonora carried out two separate attacks within 30 minutes this past
Saturday, 29 June in Empalme into Guaymas. The attacks left five dead, including two police
officers and three civilians. The gunmen wounded an additional three police officers and a
civilian during the two attacks.
On 1 July, approximately 100 members of the newly-formed National Guard arrived in
Guaymas. On 2 July, a third police officer was killed in less than a week. An off-duty officer,
dressed in civilian clothes, was gunned down at a gas station in Guaymas Norte. The agent
was shot more than 10 times.
So far 13 officers have been killed in Sonora this year, with 9 of those in the Empalme-
Guaymas area. Several officers have resigned following the most recent officer execution.

Indiscriminate shootouts between security forces and criminals, especially to the south and east of Guaymas

Listen and follow directions of local law enforcement
