Situation: Landslides were triggered late Tuesday night in the Bududa district, mostly affecting the Buwali sub-country.
The landslide has swept through over 100 homes, killing 6 with more than 50 others reported missing. With more rain in the forecast, the situation may continue to deteriorate.
Those on the slopes of Mt. Elgon have been advised to move away and seek shelter in lower and safer grounds as rain may continue. Below is a map of the affected area:
Possible Effects:
Blocked or impassable roads
Disease outbreaks due to poor hygiene and sanitation
Contaminated drinking water
Mitigating Factors to Apply:
Seek shelter away from the slopes of Mt. Elgon, in lower, safer grounds
Follow instructions of local authorities and Red Cross personnel
Monitor the situation via local news outlets
Use water purification tabs and/or bottled water
Be sure you are enrolled in the State Department’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP)
