The Situation:

Severe flooding caused evacuations, power outages, and transportation disruptions

in Maharashtra state as heavy rainfall continued on Tuesday, 6 August. More than 10,000

people have been evacuated and another 85,000 people are without power in Kolhapur

district due to flooding as of 14:30 (local time) Tuesday. Officials in Pune, Satara, Kolhapur,

and Sangli districts closed schools and colleges due to heavy flooding and associated

transportation disruptions. Moderate rainfall is forecast to continue through the end of the

week, with intermittent heavy rainfall in isolated areas.


Possible Effects:

  • Heavy rainfall which could lead to continued or worsening flooding

  • Downed trees, hindering rescue/recovery efforts

  • Road closures and train delays

  • Cancelled or delayed flights

  • Power outages in homes and places of work


Mitigating Factors to Apply:

  • Monitor local news and weather media for updates

  • Allow extra time for travel

  • Avoid traveling through flooded areas

  • Keep extra bottled water in lodging

  • Keep electronics charged

  • Check with airline for possible flight delays or cancellations
